Abstract

The replacement of the Victoria Avenue Bridge in the town of Lincoln, Ontario, Canada was a unique civil engineering project. The cast-in-place construction design was a more costly, but more appropriate and efficient method of replacement for this structure. The alternative pre-cast box units would mar the historical and aesthetic significance of the location in scenic Vineland, Ontario. The design combined elements of new technology while retaining some physical elements of the old bridge. Glass fibre reinforced polymer reinforcing bars and a concrete form liner were used to compliment the reinstated parapet wall features. This project is relevant to civil engineering practice as an example of successfully melding old and new in bridge design. These contrasting characteristics have been blended well with the use of concrete colourisation and finishing techniques. The visual appeal and character created with the reinstated balustrades and end posts have added beauty to a structure engineered for a long lifespan using new reinforcing techniques.
