Cet article veut prendre acte de l'émergence d'un ensemble de textes aux enjeux variés mais qui s'affichent sous la dénomination « récit » et voir dans quelle mesure cette pratique est en train de se constituer en un genre distinct, reconnu par l'institution littéraire québécoise. Parfois confondu avec le conte ou la nouvelle, ailleurs associé strictement à l'écriture poétique, le récit ne semble pas avoir trouvé de définition spécifique, qui autoriserait une perception nette de ses contours. Cet article trace un portrait résolument factuel du récit, c'est-à-dire la description et le questionnement d'un phénomène éditorial sans précédent. Qui publie des récits, qui en écrit, quelles collections les accueillent, où et à quel titre sont-ils recensés, à quel rythme la production du récit progresse-t-elle, etc., autant de questions qui visent à mettre en lumière l'existence et les déterminations d'une pratique en plein essor et à illustrer, de façon plus générale, le volet institutionnel de l'identité générique.
