Abstract
En prenant pour cadre d’étude le diocèse de Saint-Hyacinthe, cet article vise à présenter les différentes composantes de la stratégie catholique à l’égard du protestantisme canadien-français au XIX e siècle. Il expose les principaux arguments utilisés pour défendre le catholicisme et s’intéresse aux efforts déployés par le clergé pour réintégrer les apostats au sein de l’Église. Les propos des prêtres et leur perception du protestantisme se révèlent être en filiation directe avec l’apologétique post-tridentine condamnant vigoureusement la Réforme et les Réformés. Au total, l’activité pastorale a contribué à forger l’image que les fidèles avaient d’eux-mêmes, de leur Église et de leur foi. Elle exaltait l’institution catholique, sa hiérarchie et ses rites et tenait, en parallèle, un discours intransigeant, et même intolérant, envers les protestants.
