Nous avons etudie la mineralogie et la geochimie des sulfates efflorescents precipites sur les rives des cours d'eau pollues par les effluents acides issus des dechets miniers au site anciennement exploite de Pena del Hierro, dans la Ceinture de Pyrite Iberique. Plusieurs cours d'eau drainant les haldes de la mine abandonnee ont ete echantillonnes pour l'eau et les efflorescences aux memes endroits. L'eau possede un faible pH (0.7-3.5) et de tres fortes concentrations de Fe tot (jusqu'a 30 g/L) et d'elements traces (72 mg/L As. 0.85 mg/L Cd, 26 mg/L Co, 160 mg/L Cu, 140 mg/L Zn). Les precipites contiennent des sulfates de Fe, Mg et Al, riches en elements traces (e.g., >1000 ppm Cu et Zn, >500 ppm As etd Co, et jusqu'a 28 ppm Cd). Les mineraux importants sont la coquimbite. la magnesiocopiapite et la pickeringite, et plus rarement, le rhomboclase, l'alpersite, l'epsomite, la hexahydrite et la starkeyite. Du point de vue de stockage des elements traces, la coquimbite serait la phase la plus importante pour accommoder l'arsenic. L'alpersite et l'epsomite peuvent accommoder jusqu'a 1-2% (poids) de Zn et de Cd. La magnesiocopiapite et la pickeringite peuvent renfermer des quantites importantes de Ni, Co et Zn. Certains mineraux accessoires non identifies peuvent jouer un role important comme hotes d'elements traces comme Cd. Zn et Cu, et peuvent contenir des accumulations de terres rares comme Ce. La et Nd. La mineralogie des efflorescences est fortement regie par la geochimie de l'eau. L'epsomite, la hexahydrite et la starkeyite, qui definissent une sequence de deshydratation, sont associees a des eaux magnesiennes. La presence de l'alpersite, la inagnesiocopiapite et la pickeringite a la place de la melanterite, la copiapite et la halotrichite temoigne de la pauvrete des eaux en Fe 2+ . La coquimbite et le rhomboclase apparaissent ou les eaux sont acides et riches en Fe 3+ . Les compositions chimiques de l'eau au printemps et a l'ete concordent avec l'eventail des mineraux sulfates observes le long des berges de ces cours d'eau.
