Dans un monde en croissance où l’offre de pétrole conventionnel est de plus en plus contrainte, les hydrocarbures non conventionnels, notamment les huiles lourdes, doivent répondre à une demande croissante en énergie. Les ressources en huiles lourdes sont très importantes, notamment au Canada et au Venezuela ; mais ces produits sont caractérisés par une viscosité très élevée dans leurs réservoirs naturels, ce qui exige un apport supplémentaire d’énergie et les rend plus difficiles et coûteux à produire et à raffiner que les bruts conventionnels. Les contraintes économiques, environnementales et politiques n’en permettront qu’un développement progressif, susceptible toutefois de les faire passer de 2,5 % de la production pétrolière mondiale en 2010 à 8 % en 2030.
