Les femmes subissant un traitement pour leur cancer signalent des enjeux continus en matière de sexualité et de fonctionnement sexuel. Dans le cadre de mes fonctions de conseillère en sexualité dans un grand établissement de soins ambulatoires, j’ai passé de nombreuses heures à parler avec ces femmes et leurs partenaires et à les conseiller. La centralité de l’expérience des atteintes de l’image corporelle est un thème commun. Les problèmes liés à l’image corporelle sont associés à la mastectomie, à l’alopécie induite par la chimiothérapie, aux changements de poids, à une faible estime de soi et au fait que le partenaire puisse avoir de la difficulté à comprendre les émotions animant la femme et l’animant lui-même. Ces problèmes peuvent être abordés par les infirmières à toutes les étapes de la trajectoire du cancer. Quoique les atteintes de l’image corporelle accompagnent tous les types de cancer, elles se produisent plus fréquemment chez les femmes subissant un traitement pour un cancer du sein ou un cancer gynécologique. Cet article décrit les problèmes auxquels sont confrontées ces femmes et suggère des interventions infirmières qui peuvent s’avérer utiles.
