An Axial Phosphine Diadduct of Diruthenium(II,III) Tetraacetate

Abstract
The first axial phosphine diadduct of diruthenium(II,III) tetraacetate has been synthesized and structurally characterized. [Ru2(μ-O2CCH3)4(PCy3)2](PF6), where Cy = cyclohexyl, has a longer than usual Ru−Ru bond (2.427(1) Å) and a smaller than usual Ru−Ru−P bond angle (160.40°), and it displays unprecedented electrochemical access to the fully oxidized diruthenium(III,III) species. Conversion of this kinetic product to one of two thermodynamic products appears to be controllable by the steric bulk (cone angle) of the phosphine.
