Effects of Drying Temperature and Storage on Parthenolide Concentration of Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium L.) Leaves

ABSTRACT Feverfew is a perennial aromatic herb. Parthenolide, one of its chemical components, is a marker compound that is possibly responsible for the abatement of migraines. Studies were carried out to determine the effect of drying temperature and storage on the concentration of the marker compound. Feverfew leaves were dried, ground into powder and the pathenolide extracted was analyzed using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Results showed that drying the leaves at temperatures in the range of 30 to 60°C did not significantly affect the parthenolide concentration. In this study, storage temperature in the range of −15 to 24°C did not significantly affect parthenolide concentration. However, parthenolide concentration decreased as a function of time over 120 days of storage. In this study, the best storage condition consisted of storing powdered leaves at freezer conditions (-15°C).
