Terre-Neuve est la seule province canadienne pour laquelle l’âge de la mère (ou sa date de naissance) n’est pas recueilli lors de l’enregistrement de la naissance à l’état civil. A cause de cette lacune, on ne peut pas construire de table de fécondité pour cette province. Toutefois, depuis 1966, on dispose de statistiques hospitalières où les actes médicaux, dont les accouchements, sont enregistrés suivant l’âge du patient. On ne peut faire une équivalence parfaite entre accouchement en milieu hospitalier et naissance vivante bien que les écarts soient minces. Toutefois, en appliquant aux naissances vivantes telles que publiées par l’état civil la distribution par âge des mères à l’accouchement provenant des statistiques hospitalières, on obtient un numérateur acceptable pour le calcul des taux de fécondité par âge. Ce sont les résultats de l’application de cette méthode pour la période 1966-1974 qu’on présente dans cette note.
