Abstract
La grande biodiversité des océans est la conséquence, d’une part d’une très longue histoire évolutive qui a permis au vivant d’expérimenter de très nombreux modèles moléculaires ou solutions d’adaptations à des environnements très divers, mais aussi de la structure tridimensionnelle des multiples écosystèmes marins. A cela s’ajoute l’effet multiplicateur dû à l’imbrication d’une infinité d’écosystèmes de toutes tailles. Cette biodiversité est, dans sa globalité, très différente de celle qui est observée sur l’espace terrestre, comme le montre la présence dans les océans de nombreux phylums endémiques mais aussi comme le suggère les mises au jour de nombreuses espèces de toutes tailles et de formes nouvelles d’organisation du vivant. Tout ceci a des conséquences pratiques. Les biomasses marines et leur diversité constituent un ensemble de ressources exploitables et valorisables, utiles pour l’homme. Les secteurs de l’alimentation sont concernés, comme ceux de la santé. Un extraordinaire champ d’applications biotechnologiques est en cours d’ouverture.
