Abstract
Almost six in 10 NHS foundation hospital trusts in England reported a deficit in the first quarter of this financial year, as the “unprecedented” financial pressure facing the NHS continues to grow. The latest quarterly figures from the health sector regulator Monitor show that 86 of England’s 147 foundation trusts reported a deficit totalling £227m (€290m; $370m) between April and June 2014 and that 80% of those posting deficits were acute care trusts.1 Although 61 foundation trusts reported a surplus totalling £60m in this period, the sector as a whole posted a £167m deficit overall, …
