Abstract
Cet article propose une analyse de la fonction de la voix-off dans le film de Terrence Malick, The Thin Red Line. À partir de certaines considérations théoriques sur la fonction et la matérialité des voix au cinéma (Chion, Bonitzer, Deleuze, Balasc, Gryzik), cette étude expose différents problèmes révélés par le film : la fonction matérielle de la voix-off en relation avec un imaginaire du « bercail », une voix qui permet d’accéder aux images en devenant elle-même « image » ; la double structuration d’une épopée guerrière et d’un poème philosophico-lyrique suggéré par le lien scellé entre le vivant et le mort, entre la nature et l’humanité ; la voix en tant que témoin et sa présence/absence, sa subjectivation/désubjectivation en tant que témoignage ; la tension entre une intériorité moderne et un héroïsme épique ; les aspects mécaniques du cinéma en tant que médium comportant sa propre réalité entre la vie et le langage ; le caractère polyphonique de la rencontre avec le « même » ; l’impossibilité de la destination et ses traits énigmatiques.
