Abstract
Abstract Analysis was carried out using a simple base catalyzed derivatization on a single seed crushed in isooctane. The fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) were recovered in the isooctane phase and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC). Oleic acid content alone was not sufficient to differentiate the various commodities. α‐Linolenic acid content higher or lower than 5% could be used only to differentiate conventional from high stability specialty canola. The commodity classification was improved when both oleic and α‐linolenic acid contents were considered to give a “fingerprint” of the seed.
