Abstract
Le propos de cet article est de tenter d'expliquer l'aphorisme de R. Ismaël ben Eleazar du Talmud de Babylone Sabbath 32a concernant la désignation de l'arche sainte de la synagogue dans la phraséologie des amei-ha-aretz. Le terme arnah relatif à l'arche sainte figure sur une inscription retrouvée à Naveh dans le Golan ainsi qu'à Doura-Europos en Syrie. À travers une étude des sources littéraires, épigraphiques et archéologiques, on formule l'hypothèse que le propos de R. Ismaël ben Eleazar vise des judéo-chrétiens ayant vécu dans ces deux localités. Ainsi, l'expression vague de am-ha-aretz peut recouvrir une définition plus précise que celles admises communément.
