Abstract
En tant que pratique littéraire fondée sur la distanciation et la contradiction argumentative, l'ironie est un acte illocutoire. Elle relève de l'implicite ou de ce que la linguistique de renonciation appelle « les actes de langage indirects ». Le rétablissement du contexte énonciatif du récit permet de saisir sa relation dialogique aux discours normatifs. Pour comprendre le rôle de l'ironie dans une oeuvre littéraire, il faut déterminer le schéma hypothétique de lecture, et établir, dans la diégèse, le statut socioculturel du héros par rapport aux instances des discours réévalués. Ces considérations théoriques ont rendu possible l'analyse pragmatique de certaines formes « lexicalisées » d'ironie dans Entre les eaux. Menée dans ce premier roman de Mudimbe qui est construit sur l'hétéronomie discursive et la quête identitaire de l'actant-sujet, cette étude a permis de répondre à la question de savoir comment l'ironie fonctionne comme modalité de réévaluation des discours institutionnels devenus hégémoniques, notamment le catholicisme, le marxisme et le nationalisme africain.
