Abstract
In this work we demonstrate a novel optofluidic photobioreactor that can help address two major challenges in algae derived biofuel production. For the first time, we have demonstrated and characterized the growth of photosynthetic organisms (S. elongatus) using the evanescent field on a slab waveguide. We also have demonstrated that the energy efficiency of evanescent field illumination is at least as efficient as the direct illumination method used in current photobioreactors. The stackable structure of our photobioreactor may allow 12 fold improvement in the volumetric productivity compared to the direct illumination method.
