Abstract
RéSUMé. — Cet article retrace de manière synthétique les grands moments de la constitution du domaine universitaire d’études en communication aux États-Unis. L’auteur soutient que c’est la conjoncture historique particulière liée à la Seconde Guerre mondiale qui a marqué significativement les conditions sociales d’institutionnalisation du champ de même que les orientations épistémologiques du domaine d’études alors en formation. Alors que certains travaux menés par des membres de la première École de Chicago ouvraient vers une définition de la communication comme partage d’expériences et comme processus de création de liens sociaux entre membres d’une communauté démocratique, les conditions et contraintes particulières du contexte militaire des années 1940 ont orienté davantage les recherches vers des avenues positivistes marquées par une épistémologie behavioriste et des méthodologies quantitatives. C’est donc un paradigme de la communication conçue comme persuasion qui s’est finalement imposé au sein du domaine d’étude.
