Cet article propose une réflexion sur l’évolution de la collecte de faits folkloriques traditionnels sur le terrain. L’auteur a enquêté pendant plus de dix ans sur l’ancien territoire de la colonie du Détroit, c’est-à-dire dans la région de Windsor, à l’extrême sud-ouest de l’Ontario. Étant donné qu’aucun chercheur ne s’était penché sur la tradition orale de cette communauté francophone, la plus ancienne en Ontario, l’auteur voulut d’abord imiter les pionniers de la discipline en collectant les vestiges de la chanson traditionnelle française « avant que tout ne disparaisse ». Mais, en considérant le contexte historique du peuplement de la région et en comparant les résultats d’une étude linguistique sur le même terrain, la collecte de chansons traditionnelles est devenue beaucoup plus qu’une fin en soi. L’article examine donc le rôle de la chanson traditionnelle comme marqueur d’identité culturelle.
