Hubert Guindon a analysé mieux que quiconque l'émergence d'une nouvelle classe moyenne au Québec et il a fait de cette hypothèse la poutre maîtresse de son analyse du Québec entre 1955 et 1985. Cependant, cette pensée vigoureuse et originale s'essouffle lorsqu'elle déborde vers l'histoire ou vers la prospective. L'accueil très différent qu'on a réserve à ses travaux au Québec français et au Canada anglais peut s'expliquer par certains simplismes dont son hypothèse centrale était entourée (et qui ont séduit le Canada anglais) autant que par la démythification qu'opérait Guindon de la grande épopée que l'intelligentsia québécoise était en train de vivre.
