Le statut de l'auteur au cinéma a longtemps fait l'objet de débats et de conceptions divergentes. À partir d'une étude historique montrant l'évolution et l'élargissement du statut de l'auteur d'un film et la reconnaissance progressive du metteur en scène à ce titre, nous comparerons les apports respectifs du droit du cinéma (conventions, lois, jugements), de la théorie et de la critique cinématographiques à la compréhension de ce phénomène. Nous conclurons en mettant en évidence quelques problèmes auxquels les auteurs (du milieu du cinéma) doivent maintenant faire face.
