À la croisée de deux perspectives analytiques connues, d'une part celle qui voit dans le religieux un instituant du politique et d'autre part celle qui voit dans le mythe un déterminant pour l'organisation sociale dans son ensemble, ce texte part de l'hypothèse suivante: religieux et politique ne sont pas des domaines par essence distincts. Les découpages et les imbrications entre ce qui se présente comme étant d'ordre religieux et ce qui se présente comme étant d'ordre politique varient selon lessociétés et leurs imaginaires en cours. À partir de données recueillies au moyen d'enquêtes d'opinion passées dans cinq pays d'Amérique latine (Mexique, Argentine, Venezuela, Brésil, Chili) et analysées à la lumière de la notion de "renvois de signification", l'objectif de cette étude est de démontrer, sur la base d'un matériel empirique, que l'articulation entre religieux et politique varie en fonction des pays, des groupes de population et des confessions. Plus encore, les caractéristiques de chaque articulation spécifique tout comme le repérage des imaginaires instituants susceptibles de modifier l'agencement en place ne peuvent être dégagés que par voie comparative.
