Abstract
Depuis la Restauration de Meiji (1868), l’identité du Japon en relations internationales est frappée du sceau de l’ambiguïté. Celle-ci tire son origine de la connexion difficile de deux visions du monde, l’une occidentale et l’autre japonaise. Les oligarques de Meiji ont choisi la modernité en conservant un système d’autorité traditionnel. Pour comprendre le système international de leur époque, ils ont utilisé un schéma cognitif qui s’inspirait de la structure de pouvoir du bakufu (gouvernement militaire) d’Edo qui a donné naissance à une longue « paix kantienne ». Ce texte reprend ce schéma cognitif qui a profondément influencé la pensée politique nipponne pour en faire une analogie à caractère historique en mesure de nous éclairer sur l’ambiguïté identitaire du Japon en relations internationales, de Meiji à aujourd’hui, alors qu’il doit repenser son pacifisme constitutionnel pour affronter la puissante montante de la Chine.
