L'auteur examine les facteurs présidant aux changements conceptuels en agronomie et à la légitimation de la recherche en agrobiologie au Québec. À la fin des années 1960, les chercheurs universitaires et gouvernementaux en sciences des sols s'engagèrent dans un programme de recherche en calibration des méthodes d'analyse. Ce faisant, ils optèrent pour une interprétation physico-chimique des phénomènes de fertilité et abandonnèrent l'approche fondée sur la biologie des sols. Au cours des années 1980, les problèmes de gestion des fumiers et de dégradation des sols incitèrent les chercheurs à réviser leurs pratiques expérimentales et à étudier le rôle des microorganismes et de la matière organique dans la productivité agricole. Les agrobiologistes purent alors bénéficier d'un support institutionnel et matériel pour assurer la diffusion des connaissances en biologie des sols. L'étude porte une attention particulière à l'analyse de la pratique scientifique pour comprendre les processus de légitimation en sciences.
