Abstract

This article describes a project to design the blueprint for career and leadership development within a large Canadian police service. The results were based upon a review of existing theory in combination with internal organizational data. Analysis pinpointed the importance and relevance of respectful leadership and provided the basis for a theme connecting all curricular materials developed to articulate the blueprint. While specific aspects are tailored to precise gaps and requirements of a single, urban police department, the conceptual framework formulated around respectful leadership, and the processes applied in developing the roadmap, are offered as foundational across a comprehensive range of police services. The conceptual framework illuminating respectful leadership has clear policy implications especially, but not exclusively, in the realm of human resources development.
