Les études récentes portant sur les expositions universelles ont énormément privilégié leur caractère réifiant ou folklorisant dans le travail de cadastration des identités culturelles à l’intérieur de pavillons nationaux, ainsi que les représentations matérielles de ces expositions, qu’elles soient d’ordre architectural, ethnographique ou commercial. Cet article insistera donc sur un autre aspect des expositions universelles, celui des espaces non muséaux que sont les grandes fêtes, les spectacles de divertissement et les lieux de consommation alimentaire que l’on retrouvait dans la section coloniale de l’Exposition universelle de Paris de 1889. Cela nous permettra d’appréhender différentes dynamiques interculturelles à l’intérieur de la dialectique des expositions universelles, entre leur caractère inclusif qui favorise une interpénétration des cultures orientée vers l’utopie planétaire d’une grande civilisation à l’échelle mondiale, et leur caractère exclusif qui tend au contraire à enfermer les différentes communautés culturelles représentées dans des archétypes muséifiants. Il apparaît ainsi qu’à travers ces trois dispositifs de rencontre de l’altérité, le contact interculturel se voit intégré dans un discours globalisant qui ne conduit pas tant au rejet du colonisé dans l’altérité qu’à une récupération dans la rationalité coloniale française de la mission civilisatrice. La documentation utilisée comprendra des récits de visites à l’Exposition de 1889 qui abordent les différents lieux et manifestations susnommés.
