Parmi les textes qui nous parlent de la Nouvelle-France et de la rencontre entre les Européens et les peuples autochtones du continent nord-américain, il est temps de rendre justice aux ouvrages rédigés en latin. Cet article propose l a première édition du texte latin des deux premiers chapitres (les lettres [ch. 1], et les mots [ch. 2]) de la grammaire montagnaise rédigée vers 1768 par le jésuite Jean-Baptiste de la Brosse. Cette édition est précédée de quelques réflexions aidant à remettre ce travail dans le contexte des autres ouvrages linguistiques réalisés en Nouvelle-France, en soulignant les questions que pose la description des langues amérindiennes réalisée à travers le prisme des structure de la grammaire latine qui a servi à la fois d’outil théorique et de modèle interprétatif.
