Abstract Voltage gated calcium channels regulate numerous physiological functions, across a wide range of organ systems including heart, muscle, and brain. Different calcium channel subtypes have evolved to mediate specific cellular functions in these tissues. Because of their fundamental importance, voltage‐gated calcium channels are targeted by a number of clinically active drugs (including gabapentin, pregabalin, ethosuximide, nimodipine, etc.) in conditions such as pain, epilepsy, and hypertension. In addition, calcium channels are emerging as targets for novel therapeutic indications.
