Cette étude a pour objectif l'identification et la mesure des principales dimensions du système urbain québécois. Trente-neuf caractéristiques de municipalités du Québec sont réduites, par une analyse factorielle, à quelques facteurs. Ces facteurs correspondent soit à des dimensions universelles des systèmes urbains comme le statut socioéconomique, la culture, le cycle de vie, la taille fonctionnelle et la superficie, soit à des particularités de l'économie locale. Grâce à une réplique dans le temps de l'analyse, on a évalué la stabilité des dimensions et celle des poids des variables sur ces dimensions. L'étude illustre aussi une façon de rendre opératoire la typologie du schéma systémique de L. Dion, dont on a retenu cinq des sept paliers (démographie, écologie, économie, stratification sociale et culture). Le seul palier qui ne ressort pas comme une catégorie indépendante des autres, c'est la catégorie écologique.
