De toutes les notions wittgensteiniennes, celle de “jeu de langage” est une des plus énigmatiques, car, malgré l’évidence qu’elle peut avoir à l’intuition, l’apparente immédiateté de son sens, elle se dérobe, dans le texte même, à toute saisie directe. Cet article présente quelques remarques sur cette notion, les définitions qui en sont données sont considérées sur un mode critique, la perspective dans laquelle elle a été introduite est évaluée du point de vue du travail philosophique que Wittgenstein entendait réaliser. Dans cet examen, une attention particulière est portée au déroulement chronologique de l’écriture de Wittgenstein. Quelques éléments en faveur d’un rapprochement avec le pragmatisme peircéen sont esquissés.
