2010 est l’année de la biodiversité. Depuis les années quatre-vingt dix, un grand nombre d’indicateurs de biodiversité ont été mis en place pour en mesurer l’évolution. Nous avons souhaité faire dans ce papier une revue des indicateurs de biodiversité existant pour les milieux marins en nous focalisant sur ceux que l’on trouve dans les Conventions internationales ou régionales mais aussi dans les textes réglementaires et stratégiques à l’échelle française et européenne. Nous avons aussi cherché à identifier les cadres conceptuels à partir desquels ces indicateurs peuvent être interprétés.Ce travail a permis de souligner que la plupart des indicateurs ne s’inscrivent pas dans des cadres conceptuels précis mais plutôt au regard de grands « thèmes » très génériques. Par ailleurs, il apparaît que ces indicateurs sont finalement moins focalisés sur des composantes de la biodiversité que sur les pressions qui s’exercent sur elle ou les services qu’elle permet d’offrir à l’homme. Parmi les composantes de la biodiversité, les indicateurs focalisés sur les espèces et les habitats remarquables apparaissent comme dominants. Enfin, une part importante de ces indicateurs n’est en pratique pas utilisée ni renseignée.
