Abstract
Étant donné qu’il ne représente pas une identité articulée sur un État-nation, le Canada anglais est incapable d’ancrer d’autres identités « en » soi, et ce, de telle façon que ces identités paraissent souvent être l’identité « du » Canada anglais lui-même. La faillite de la métaphore du contenant, ou plus exactement sa réversibilité, constitue le problème clé de l’identité canadienne-anglaise contemporaine. Une identité hégémonique définit un universel qui fixe la place des identités particulières. En temps de crise, cette relation non problématique entre le particulier et l’universel devient mobile. Aussi, les identités créent des relations nouvelles sans devenir fixes. Cet essai fait l’hypothèse que l’identité canadienne-anglaise est un « paradoxe constitutif », dans la mesure où son existence dépend des identités qui existent significativement en son sein, non seulement pour fournir le contexte, mais pour assurer l’existence même de l’identité du Canada anglais en tant que tel. L’idée même d’une identité culturelle consciente d’elle-même au Canada anglais est précaire; elle peut seulement être développée dans la mesure où l’héritage du nationalisme de gauche sera à la fois préservé et transformé afin de répondre, de manière critique, aux défis posés par les forces de la globalisation.
