ABB Bomem has recently designed a field-deployable reflectometer to measure the diffuse spectral reflectance of surfaces from 0.7 &mu;m to 13.5 &mu;m. Its spectral resolution is adjustable and can be as fine as 4 cm<sup>-1</sup>. The instrument is designed to field and laboratory operation. It is portable and battery-operated. In its simplest mode, the instrument is automated and can be operated by non-specialist personnel with minimal training. The instrument was designed to build a spectral database of different surfaces in various conditions (different humidity, temperature, texture, mixing, etc.) and in the presence of various interfering chemicals (oils, solvents, etc.). The instrument has its own built-in infrared sources. The sources illuminate the ground area to be measured. The instrument has also two built-in reference diffusers: a Spectralon diffuser and an Infragold diffuser.
