Abstract
Il s’agit d’examiner la façon dont la littérature romantique française met en scène le motif de la conversion, le christianisme étant condition essentielle au romantisme. Les auteurs considérés sont Chateaubriand, Mme de Staël, Victor Hugo, théoriciens d’une conversion qui peut tenir au modèle paulinien ou au contraire se définir par le long cours des croisements et du progrès des civilisations. Quinet et Flaubert, pour Ahasvérus et La Tentation de saint Antoine, permettent de saisir les variations que prend le motif de la conversion dans le domaine proprement littéraire.
