Multiple international launches: The United States, Europe, and South America

Abstract
Working for a nonprofit organization allows creativity, intellectual freedom, a varied work environment, and many exciting new challenges. But even on the best days, we could not imagine that we would be able to launch a new magazine with a series of international launches. International launch parties are much more in line with the creation of fashion magazines, pharmaceutical products, and new cars, not a new scientific publication on animal agriculture. And we certainly could not imagine the success of the launches. In July of 2011, we distributed the first issue of the first volume of Animal Frontiers at the 2011 ASAS meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. In August, we were able to bring that issue to Europe for the European launch at the 2011 EAAP meetings in Stavanger, Norway. Now we will introduce the second issue in South America at the inaugural ASAS-Asociación Argentina de Producción Animal (AAPA) meeting in Mar del Plata, Argentina. When we realized that we were going to have an opportunity to introduce our new magazine in South America at meetings in Argentina, the managing board of Animal Frontiers instantly agreed on the topic: global beef production. There really is no better stage to launch a magazine on this issue. Beef production is culturally embedded in the social and economic framework of Argentina. Geographic diversity, multiple production systems, and unique genetics have allowed Argentina to produce some of the most sought-after beef products worldwide. The importance of the beef industry socially and economically to both internal and export markets in Argentina has spurred Argentina's beef producers to examine many worldwide issues related to beef production. The size and geographic diversity of the country have forced the country to examine numerous production systems and related challenges across regions; hence, Argentina can serve as a microcosm for worldwide beef production issues. In this issue, Arelovich et al. (2011) outline a number of worldwide beef production issues, the regions where they have the largest challenges, and solutions being put forth by modern beef production research within the Argentine academic environment. It is interesting as we examine the papers in this issue that the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Australasia all have the same challenges and concerns surrounding global beef production. Many of the most common concerns surrounding beef production will be even more pronounced in 2011 as the markets attempt to correct themselves in light of severe drought in many of the largest beef-producing countries, including Argentina and the United States. As we move forward with the South American launch at the inaugural ASAS-AAPA meeting, there will be multiple papers presented from around the globe to address shared advances and continuing challenges associated with global beef production. However, there is another reason that the managing board of Animal Frontiers has elected to launch our second issue in Argentina at the inaugural ASAS-AAPA meeting, and that is simply the shared understanding that it is imperative for the scientific voices of animal science to work together to foster a dialogue and enhance our ability to disseminate scientific data concerning agriculture. The ASAS, EAAP, and Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS) are traditionally regional professional organizations and by definition have had an insular voice. However, in the last generation of strategic plans each group added strategic directives to enhance their global voice and to enhance their international network of partnerships. Animal Frontiers in and of itself is a large step toward meeting the goals associated with the new strategic directives. For ASAS and EAAP, a partner and a sponsor, respectively, of the ASAS-AAPA meeting, this conference is another example. It is rewarding to watch multiple programs involving multiple partners become integrated to ensure that we are able to truly cover and express the global importance of an issue. With that said, we ask that you enjoy the second issue of Animal Frontiers, and we hope that you are able to join us at the South American launch of Animal Frontiers.
