Abstract

Due to its special geological context and its specific soils, the basaltic region of southern Syria preserves exceptional architectural evidence. A three years survey (2003-2005) undertaken by a Syro-French team in the Leja area has revealed many Bronze Age sites, clarifying our understanding of the initial process of urbanization. Labwe is the most extraordinary of these sites. We have been able to make a complete plan of the urban site at the moment of its abandonment, apparently during the second quarter of the 3rd millennium BC. We here provide a first general description of the site.
