Abstract
Nous nous intéressons à la famille et à l'enfance comme catégories cognitives et catégories du sens commun du point de vue d'une sociologie de la connaissance. L'émergence de la catégorie «enfant» dans le discours populaire québécois constitue une mesure sociologiquement pertinente des transformations démographiques qu'a connues la société québécoise. L'analyse met en évidence le paradoxe suivant : c'est à partir du moment où l'on s'est mis à parler des enfants que l'on a commencé à en avoir moins. L'enfant pensé est devenu un choix. Nous avons retracé les manières de parler de la famille et de l'enfant dans divers matériaux: histoires de vie, autobiographies, entrevues et correspondances amoureuses, cherchant à repérer dans ces discours de sens commun la construction de l'espace et du temps de l'enfant et de la famille, et ses transformations au cours du dernier siècle.
