Abstract
Hydro-Québec et le Mouvement Desjardins partagent trois caractéristiques essentielles : 1- elles sont nées dans la mouvance des luttes antimonopolistes menées par la petite bourgeoisie francophone et ses alliés, lesquelles ont culminé au cours de l'entre-deux-guerres ; 2- toutes deux ont été des lieux d'expression privilégiés du nationalisme économique québécois ; 3- elles ont contribué, chacune à sa manière, à la modernisation de l'économie, qui s'est traduite par l'éclosion, puis l'affirmation d'un nouveau groupe dirigeant au sein de la société québécoise. L'essor de ces deux grandes organisations renvoie, de manière plus générale, à ce qu'Alain Touraine a nommé un mouvement social de développement, c'est-à-dire un mouvement pluriclassiste engageant à la fois des acteurs sociaux et des acteurs institutionnels (l'Église et l'État) dans un processus de modernisation et d'appropriation d'une économie dont d'importants secteurs paraissaient jusque-là contrôlés de l'extérieur.
