Abstract
Cette étude quantitative de géographie historique réalisée à partir d'archives, de cartes et de relevés s'intéresse à un phénomène géographique majeur au Québec : le rang. Trois aspects sont considérés : 1 ) l'ouverture des rangs (1 900 en 1835,12 000 en 1948) ; 2) l'occupation des rangs qui suit une courbe concave-convexe avec un maximum d'environ 6700 rangs habités au cours du premier quart du XXe siècle ; 3) la fermeture des rangs. L'évaluation des trois phases de ce cycle met en perspective la situation actuelle : plus de deux rangs sur trois ne sont plus occupés et, en 1980, la Plaine de Montréal constitue la principale région à rangs du Québec.
