Abstract
Cet article rend compte du processus de construction des infrastructures d'approvisionnement en eau dans une municipalité suburbaine de la région montréalaise (Saint- Louis) entre les années 1890 et 1910. L'accent est mis sur la constitution d'un réseau de relations sociopolitiques qui met en scène trois groupes d'acteurs: un ingénieur-entrepreneur, des dirigeants d'une entreprise privée de services publics et des membres du conseil municipal. L'article présente la nature des arrangements et des ententes mis en place entre ces groupes d'acteurs en analysant le rôle spécifique d'un ingénieur civil (J.-Émile Vanier) à titre de médiateur entre les diverses parties. La portée de ce jeu de relations sur les choix urbanistiques y est également exposée.
