Abstract
Les universitaires français, tout particulièrement l’historien René Rémond, ont longtemps nié la possibilité même de l’existence d’un fascisme français — et ce, en dépit de l’évidence que constitue le régime de Vichy — en arguant d’une « immunité » ou d’une « allergie » locale à cette idéologie d’importation. Des chercheurs étrangers, tout particulièrement l’Israélien Zeev Sternhell, ont au contraire démontré que, non seulement on trouve des idées « préfascistes » en France dès la fin du xixe siècle — et ce, émanant de grands noms comme Barrès, etc. —, mais encore ces idées seraient à la base même du fascisme italien et du nazisme allemand. Facteur aggravant : tous les anticonformistes des années 1930 (Emmanuel Mounier, notamment) auraient été « fascistes sans le savoir ». Une telle charge a bien évidemment suscité des réactions indignées en France. Cet article montre comment la polémique de longue durée est certes motivée par des questions d’honneur national et de dicible académique, mais relève surtout d’une incompréhension fondamentale entre histoire des faits et histoire des idées.
