Abstract
À travers le « poème philosophique », genre majeur depuis l’Antiquité, la poésie a partie liée avec l’enseignement. Mais ce genre fait l’objet d’une suspicion dans la seconde moitié du xixe siècle, au même titre que l’épopée à laquelle il est d’ailleurs apparenté et, d’une manière plus générale, le « poème » long, narratif, descriptif ou discursif. C’est principalement au nom de « l’hérésie de l’enseignement » que Baudelaire, puis Mallarmé condamnent toute poésie d’idées. Alors qu’une certaine poésie du xxe siècle affiche, plus que jamais, ses ambitions philosophiques, elle doit donc éviter le « prosaïsme ». Non plus « exposer » des idées, une « thèse », un « message », jugés étrangers à l’imagination poétique, mais penser poétiquement, en images, tel est l’idéal du « poème philosophique moderne », qui rompt le lien historique entre la poésie et l’enseignement.
