Abstract
La performance en mathématiques, au collégial et dès le secondaire, est le principal facteur relié au choix d'un programme universitaire par les étudiants de cégep. Ce critère fait apparaître une hiérarchie entre les disciplines, des sciences de la santé, où se dirigent davantage les plus forts, aux sciences humaines, vers lesquelles se replient les plus faibles, après un fréquent changement d'orientation au cégep. Le critère secondaire de l'origine socio-économique classe le génie, mais non la santé, au pôle élitiste, tandis que l'éducation apparaît comme le seul programme populaire à tous points de vue. L'étude est basée sur une enquête par questionnaire auprès des étudiants de deuxième année du secteur général dans les cégeps francophones, réalisée au printemps 1985.
