L'une des singularités les plus fortes de l'oeuvre romanesque d'Anne Hébert tient à sa propension à mettre à l'épreuve l'identité de ses personnages dans leur rapport aux diverses formes de pratiques discursives. Ce différend qui oppose le sujet hébertien aux signes culturels est lié à la résurgence dévastatrice du drame sauvage et archaïque de la séparation originaire, et ouvre l'espace romanesque à l'indicible que seule une parole esthésique, soucieuse de réconcilier le corps et le Verbe, peut couler dans des formes signifiantes.
