Résumé La nature occupe une place importante dans la constitution et l’organisation des territoires nord-américains. La nature sauvage affrontée par les pionniers, ou Wilderness, participe de l’identité nationale et a motivé la création précoce des parcs nationaux – surtout dans les Montagnes rocheuses – et, avec eux, de réseaux nationaux d’espaces protégés parmi les plus ambitieux au monde. Mais la découverte de nouveaux gisements d’hydrocarbures, l’étalement urbain ou les atteintes aux surfaces forestières constituent aussi des facteurs de déstabilisation du rapport des sociétés à la nature sur les fronts écologiques du Canada ou les secteurs métropolitains des États-Unis et du Mexique. Cela relance dans le même temps la question du partage de la gouvernance avec les Peuples autochtones.
