Abstract
The World Social Forum, with its goals of grassroots democracy and ecological sustainability, has been slow to take roots in the Chinese-speaking world. This research note describing the first Social Forum in Taiwan shows how the Social Forum is rooted in local networks and struggles. Due to the authoritarian regime on the Chinese mainland, there is little hope for a Social Forum there in the near future.
