Abstract
Marcel Mauss, l'ethnologie et la politique : le don Si l'« Essai sur le don », publié en 1925, occupe une place aussi centrale dans l'œuvre de Marcel Mauss (1872-1950), c'est que non seulement il offre un renouvellement de la théorie durkhei-mienne de la cohésion sociale, mais aussi il constitue un point de rencontre de ses préoccupations scientifiques et sociales : ethnographie et politique se rejoignent pour Mauss, les années d'après-guerre, en particulier le début des années 1920, sont des plus actives. D'abord sur le plan professionnel : Mauss relance L'Année sociologique, fonde une société savante (Institut français de sociologie) et crée un centre de formation et de recherche (Institut d'ethnologie de Paris). Ensuite sur le plan social et politique : participation au mouvement coopératif et socialiste, membre du conseil d'administration du journal socialiste Le Populaire, publication de nombreux articles dans Le Populaire et La Vie socialiste. Les deux grands projets qu'élaboré alors Mauss sont indissociablement intellectuels et politiques : il s'agit d'un grand travail sur la nation et, à la suite de la publication de ses « Observations sur la violence », d'un ouvrage sur le bolchevisme.
