Si les objets grecs, étrusques et phéniciens ont intéressé une grande partie de l’Europe dès le xviiie siècle, il semble que ce soit la parution de la Description de l’Égypte entre 1809 et 1828 qui ait soulevé l’enthousiasme pour l’Égypte des voyageurs comme des collectionneurs, avides de « curiosités » ou d’exotisme. L’Ouest de la France n’a pas échappé à cette « Égyptomania » et les voyageurs collectionneurs ont beaucoup publié, échangé comme cela se faisait au xixe siècle, avant de donner leurs collections aux musées, souvent par l’intermédiaire des sociétés savantes. Ainsi les musées de l’Ouest se sont-ils enrichis d’ouchebtis, sarcophages, momies, vases canopes, souvenirs précieux et fragiles complétés par de nombreux dépôts, notamment du musée du Louvre mais aussi du musée Guimet. À la suite des expositions universelles à succès du xixe siècle, l’engouement pour l’Égypte est tel que les musées organisent des expositions à partir de leurs fonds propres et aujourd’hui encore la mode de l’Égypte ne se dément pas : elle fait partie des grands thèmes à succès des expositions actuelles.
