Abstract
Les rapports entre maladie mentale et criminalité ont été analysés sous de nombreux angles. La problématique privilégiée dans le présent article fait ressortir que les situations ou les comportements problématiques n'appartiennent pas « naturellement » à un modèle de contrôle social plutôt qu'à un autre. De façon précise, les auteures se sont penchées sur le traitement judiciaire des personnes souffrant de problèmes de santé mentale. Elles tentent de mieux comprendre la dynamique d'intervention du système pénal pour les individus dont le comportement aurait pu aussi bien être défini en termes de déviance ou de pathologie qu'en termes de délinquance, et pour ce faire, elles optent pour une description quantitative des caractéristiques de ce groupe particulier de justiciables. Elles poursuivent un double objectif : d'une part, familiariser les intervenantes et intervenants sociaux à cette problématique et, d'autre part, fournir un premier portrait de cette population particulière ainsi que de son cheminement judiciaire.
