This paper concerns a high performance transmitter (Tx) and an ultra low-power receiver (Rx) dedicated to medical implant communications operating at Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) frequency band. Tx benefits from a new efficient Frequency-Shift Keying (FSK) modulation technique which provides more than 20 Mb/s of data-rate and consumes only 0.084 nJ/b validated through post-layout simulations using 1.2 V supply. The On-Off Keying (OOK) Rx consists of a noncoherent detection design based on envelope detector scheme. The proposed receiver was simulated with modulation index ranging from 60 to 100%. Data-rate of 2 Mb/s was achieved while consuming 4.8 μW from a 0.9 V supply. The proposed circuits are implemented in 90 nm CMOS technology.
