Abstract
Cet article explore le sens du droit à la liberté religieuse dans une société démocratique dont la laïcité est le Credo en matière religieuse. Il montre comment cette laïcité vit aujourd'hui son épreuve de vérité dans son impuissance à donner sens. Dans la conscience de cette limite, elle se tourne vers l'éthique pour donner un contenu positif à son Credo. Elle renvoie donc à des valeurs et indique par là qu'elle n'a pas en elle-même ses fondements. L'éthique dont il est ici question est un aspect du spirituel (son implication pratique) qui fonde dans un absolu (i.e. qu'elle ne va pas sans référence dernière, spirituelle). La laïcité donc a un fondement spirituel ou elle est vide. Cette réalité du spirituel comme dimension dernière de la réalité est ce qui justifie et motive le droit à la liberté puisqu'elle est le lieu par excellence de cette liberté. Sera-t-elle cependant capable de le faire sans engager un combat contre tout ce qui, en elle et en dehors d'elle, tend à la pervertir?
